Interview to: Doct. Alan Winstead
From the business point of view, what are the advantages of developing an EIP in the Republic of Panama?
Panama has significant competitive advantages in the region, including the Channel and all the logistics industry land, sea and air transport. These doors give to exporters of Panama access to large markets with routes in the Pacific and the Atlantic coma Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, the United States and Canada. Another advantage is our fully dollarized economy. The country has a strong banking center with more than 92 international banks. In addition, Panama has laws and incentives that facilitate investments and increase the return on investment for companies that are part of the Eco-Industrial Park.
Is it possible to take advantage of foreign companies based in Panama to create high-quality bio products?
Yes, I think that many organizations could benefit greatly from the transfer of knowledge, creation and marketing of bio products that can offer foreign companies. This is an industry that is just beginning to Panama. Many efforts have so far come from INDICASAT, SENACYT and some companies. Every year the participation of organizations grows. Biotechnology can ‘be an important pillar of the national economy.
Is it possible to create synergies between companies and local university?
Of course. Private businesses must always walk hand in hand with the university building a mutually beneficial relationship in which the biggest winner is the students. For example, when an enterprise carries out research and development activities with a university the student has access to an experience that helps him to find good jobs and pursue a career by implementing the experience obtained. The University of Panama have always been open to create synergies with companies to add value to the training of their students.
What types of companies are eligible to to develop biotechnology projects in EIP?
All companies that belong to a field that requires the benefits that biotechnology offers. Today, biotechnology can be applied to various aspects of our lives. For example, in medicine, food production and manufacturing, in nutrition, in cosmetics, in the manufacture of biodegradable products, cleaning products and more.
Desires for his country in 2014 ….
My wishes for Panama in 2014 are that the entire society benefits of continued economic growth through the creation of value for all the products and services it offers. The Instruction be strengthened at all levels and that companies continue implementing innovations and good business practices across the entire organization.
Alan Winstead began his career in the food and beverage industry in 2001 as a consultant for opening and managing restaurants and hotels after graduation in one of the best hotel universities of the world in Switzerland. He obtained a Masters in Business Administration, with an emphasis strategic concept in Monterrey Technological University in 2004 and began as a commercial vice-president at a company of businness intelligence and engineering geo-spatial focusing on sales, design and implementation of projects. Then became president. In 2008, he started working on the research and development of biotechnology focused on the extraction of the active components of plants in Panama and on recycling of organic matter for use in the production of fertilizers.
